Two graduates of the Social Communication degree and the Postgraduate Program in Media Studies (PPgEM/UFRN) have just released a book that rescues the origins of the press in Rio Grande do Sul. History of Journalism in Rio Grande do Norte (1832–1889) is the most recent work by journalists and researchers Gustavo Sobral and Juliana Bulhões, both graduated from UFRN.
The result of a series of investigations that began in 2022, the book explores the first records of journalism in the state, with an emphasis on the practices, formats and contexts that marked the period. The publication is from Biblioteca Oeste (2025) and has a preface and editing by historian Francisco Issac Dantas, in addition to design by Gabriel Araújo, review by Matheus Pereira and critical review by Maurício Barros do Amaral.
The work analyzes topics such as the newsworthiness criteria of the time, the production and printing processes of newspapers, the relationships between journalism and politics, in addition to addressing the role of the chronicle, reporting and topics such as slavery, Indianism and female journalism.
History of Journalism in Rio Grande do Norte is available for free download on Gustavo Sobral's website, on the publisher's website and can be purchased in printed version at the UICLAP store.
The book is part of a series of publications by the duo, also trained in postgraduate studies at UFRN, which includes titles such as Manual de Assessoria de Imprensa, Journalismo, Biografia e Crônica, Memórias do Jornalismo no Rio Grande do Norte and As Jornalistas, all available free of charge on the website.
