Project is aimed at social participation and support for the institutionalization of democratic structures among precarious groups in Bairro Planalto, in Natal
The Humanitas Institute for Integrated Studies, a Specialized Academic Unit at UFRN, has the Project “Literacy and political protagonism with precarious groups and communities” underway. The extension action, contemplated in Notice 001/2025/PROEX, is aimed at social participation and support for the institutionalization of democratic structures among precarious groups.
The project is based on the debate of social problems, participatory democracy, collective construction of knowledge and proposition of sustainable actions. Strengthening the curricularization of extension in the Interdisciplinary Bachelor's Degree in Humanities, offered by the Humanitas Institute of UFRN, involves students of the curricular components Extensionist Practices I and Extensionist Practices II, for a total of 240 hours, in partnership with the Escola Municipal Estudante Emmanuel Bezerra, in Bairro Planalto, west of the capital of Rio Grande do Norte.
The literacy and political protagonism action has listened to the director and pedagogical team of the Emmanuel Bezerra School to develop activities in line with the political-pedagogical demands of its teaching staff. Based on this listening, the project team organizes its activities with the school's teachers, to later expand them to the entire school community and expand the external audience to precarious groups and communities, including associations, leaders, activists and other education and health professionals in the Planalto neighborhood.
The Planalto neighborhood, selected as the territory for the proposed intervention, has a population predominantly made up of people from classes C and D and is located in the west zone of the capital. Although it is relatively new (created from the dismemberment of Bairro Guarapes, by Municipal Law No. 151/1998), it has experienced significant growth in recent years, generated by a process of urban expansion that led to a high degree of urban precariousness and socio-environmental vulnerability.
The Project has Prof. Alipio DeSousa Filho and with Profa. Rayane Oliveira in coordination and with Prof. Johnatan do Vale as a lecturer on one of the team's components, in addition to consulting with Profa. Sonia Soares (DNUT/UFRN) and Prof. Marlécio Cunha (Education Center/UFPB). The team hopes that the results of the collaborations between the university and the precarious community can impact social movements, unions, political parties and state bodies, based on the culmination of the project's work with the delivery of products relevant to the interventions based on the needs and interests advised throughout the project.
