Promoting artistic and cultural activities is the mission of the Consolidated Art and Culture Groups (GCAC), linked to the Dean of Extension (Proex/UFRN). Currently, the University has 22 GCAC, which work in areas such as dance and theater. To encourage the creation and continued operation of these groups, Proex published a new ordinance, updating the guidelines for their management.
GCACs are essentially extension projects, promoting activities such as presentations, events and research. Furthermore, they provide environments for students, staff and the external public to express themselves through art and culture.
One example is the UFRN Dance Group (GDUFRN), working since 1990 to promote dance practice at the Institution. One of the main objectives of the project is to expand access to dance for groups internal and external to UFRN through events, such as open classes and workshops. In addition, the group performs and shows.
The new Proex ordinance is the result of the work of a commission created in 2024 to study, review and propose the new regulation. According to Veridiano Maia, coordinator of the Coordination of Culture, Museums and Memory (CMMM/Proex), the ordinance is a way of formalizing the GCAC, guaranteeing the functioning of the groups through parameters of actions and extension procedures that the projects must follow.
Although some of the projects have existed for decades at UFRN, it was in 2009 and 2010 that the GCAC were formalized as Consolidated Groups, being supported by Proex through notices.
For Veridiano, the Consolidated Groups are important for UFRN because they put theoretical learning into practice and democratize art for the external public, in addition to contributing to the training of students in courses related to art. “Some can even be the basis for master’s projects”, says the coordinator.
