Until December 5th, it will be possible to visit the exhibition “Color Abstractions” at the Laboratory Gallery of the Department of Arts, Central Campus of UFRN, which presents painting works carried out by students of the Color Theory curricular component of the Visual Arts course. The main theme deals with three series of exercises carried out using the color circle involving abstract shapes and the concept of seven color contrasts developed by the Swiss artist Johannes Itten (1888-1967) during the period when he was a professor at the Bauhaus, from 1919 to 1923, in the city of Weimar, Germany. The seven contrasts concern notions of light and dark, pure, complementary colors and saturation, warm and cold colors, quantity of colors and simultaneous contrast, with the primary colors yellow, blue and red, plus black and white, as the starting point for abstract compositions. In total, around 130 works are being presented, carried out by 19 students from the Color Theory class using acrylic and gouache techniques on A3 paper (31 x 42cm), smaller or even larger.
Also included in the exhibition are two large-format collective paintings created by students in the semester of 2023.2. This exercise was proposed by Professor Bettina Rupp for Painting I classes in which the student received a sheet containing part of a drawing. Everyone could paint it however they wanted, respecting the existing lines as color limits. Without knowing what they were painting, it was only at the end, when each painting was placed next to each other that the image would appear. The exercise is similar to a puzzle, but without the image of the box as a guide. Each painting is made up of 20 parts, in which creativity and experimentation with textures and colors were worked on individually and taking into account aspects of abstraction.
Visitation: until 12/05/24
