University discusses rights and criminalization of youth

From August 14th to 16th, at the Education Center (CE), of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), the National Symposium: the poetics of (r)existence will take place, with the theme The Poetic (R)Existence: rights, arts and experiences of childhood and youth.
This edition celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Observatory of the Child Population in Contexts of Violence (Obijuv), which is a project developed since 2009 at UFRN. The Observatory works to monitor youth policies and encourage actions that promote the empowerment of young people in urban peripheries.
The program features themes such as mental health and care networks for the young population, gender and sexuality, arts and resistance, democracy, participation and social rights, mediated by important national scholars. This is the case of historian Fernanda Jardim, anti-prison activist, researcher on racial issues and criminology who will discuss strategies for combating child mortality.
On the 12th and 13th, geographer Caio César, writer and researcher on black masculinities, will moderate the mini-course Understanding Masculinities, aimed only at men. There are no restrictions on ethnicity or sexuality, you just need to be over 16 years old. Full participation in the days is mandatory to obtain the certificate. More about the Observatory
Obijuv's actions are based on three axes: teaching, research and extension. Furthermore, the Observatory is a tool for social control of policies and human rights violations committed by the State against youth. From a critical perspective of social policies, the project proposes the development of investigations and actions within the University and community, with a view to strengthening the autonomy and political protagonism of young people, thus serving as a tool for social transformation
