UFRN holds event on the centenary of Modern Art Week

São Paulo, Theatro Municipal, 1922: 100 years ago, the memorable Modern Art Week took place in Brazil. The modernist movement, formed by artists such as Mário de Andrade and Tarsila do Amaral, broke paradigms and established a new vision for national artistic production. To honor the centenary, between the months of June and November this year, UFRN is holding the event: 22 in 22: tribute to the Centenary of the Modern Art Week. Registration for the institutional opening of the celebration, which takes place on June 2nd, is available on Sigaa.
Promoted by the Center for Art and Culture (NAC/UFRN) and the Dean of Extension (Proex/UFRN), in partnership with the School of Music (EMUFRN), the UFRN Editorial Office (EDUFRN) and the Department of Arts (Deart/UFRN), the 22 in 22 event aims to reflect on the impacts on Brazilian society after the age of 100. Over the months, there will be a program featuring debates, artistic presentations, videos, exhibitions and book launches.
For Teodora Alves, director of the NAC, although there is controversy about the Modern Art Week having actually generated a social and artistic impact in Brazil, the movement made in 1922 is considerably seen as a watershed in thinking about the arts and the national identity for them. “The modernists were influential in that they put on the agenda the search for a Brazilian national art, for a renewal of artistic creativity beyond European standards”, he says.
According to her, the artistic, political, cultural and social movement seen in the Week of 22 continues to generate questions that, to this day, reverberate in the arts, however, they are being updated based on contemporary times, the possibility of new creative processes and cultural plurality. At UFRN, the 22 em 22 will be a space for reflection, celebration and appreciation of the centenary, in addition to addressing important issues focused on the past and current context.
Open to the public internal and external to UFRN, the target audience is made up of teachers, students, University employees, artists and others interested in the topic. At first, it will only be possible to register for the opening event. In the next meetings, there will be registrations for each activity via Sigaa or in person at the action location.
