GeoRisco and Nuped collaborate with the UN and Government of RN to reduce disaster risk

The GeoRisco research group and the Interdisciplinary Center for Disaster Research (NUPED), both from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), participated on May 18, at the Governor's civil office, in Natal, in the technical assistance mission of the "Building Resilient Cities 2030" (MCR2030) initiative. The action was promoted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Civil Defense of the state of RN, with the aim of raising awareness and expanding the commitment of public agents to reducing disaster risks in cities in Rio Grande do Norte.
GeoRisco and Nuped were represented by professors Lutiane Almeida and Ricardo Matos. Professor Lutiane contributed to the training in the module on threats, vulnerabilities and disasters in Rio Grande do Norte, under the responsibility of UFRN, addressing the topic “Disaster risk indicators in Brazil: multiple scales” bringing different research experiences on disaster risk indicators from the national scale (DRIB Index) to micro-scale approaches (vulnerable communities in Natal).
In the end, the civil defense agents learned about the “Scorecard” (in Portuguese: Self-Assessment Tool of Resilience to Disasters for Cities). The Scorecard provides a set of indicators that allow local governments to assess their resilience to disasters, structuring around the UNDRR Ten Principles for Building Resilient Cities.
