Law No. 11,340, sanctioned on August 7, 2006, seeks to create mechanisms to curb domestic and family violence against women, in addition to eliminating all forms of discrimination, thus punishing the aggressors. However, according to research carried out in 2010 by the Perseu Abramo Foundation (FPA) together with the Social Service of Commerce (Sesc), five women are beaten every 2 minutes in Brazil. In this sense, the UFRN Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (CCHLA) is holding, on May 6th, at 10 am, an event with the theme Public policies to combat domestic and family violence against women and the role of the judicial system.
Initially, the guest speakers, José Antonio Fernandes de Macêdo and Sílvia Rebeca Sabóia Quezado, give an exhibition on the proposed topic and then there is a debate involving the participating public. José Antonio, who is chief data scientist for the digital transformation of the Government of the State of Ceará and professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), coordinates the Data Science Laboratory (Insight Data Science Lab) at UFC and the ÍRIS Innovation and Data Laboratory of the Civil House of the Government of the State of Ceará. Interested parties can learn more about the Insight Data Science Lab at the Federal University of Ceará through the website.
Researcher at Insight Data Science Lab and master in Private Law, Professor Sílvia is the creator of the Women's Panel – Protection in Measures software, from the Court of Justice of the State of Ceará. The event is coordinated by professor Raquel Maria da Costa Silveira, from the Department of Public Policies (DPP), and is aimed at students, teachers and UFRN employees interested in the topic. The focus of the study to be presented by the invited researchers at the event is the growth of femicides in Brazil, exposing a diagnosis aimed at identifying recurring factors based on the analysis of legal processes.
The DPP, the Postgraduate Program in Urban and Regional Studies (PPEUR) and the CCHLA participate in carrying out the project. According to Raquel, “the event will start with a discussion about the high rates of feminicide in Brazil and the importance of interlocution between different actors, acting in a network, as stipulated by the Maria da Penha Law, so that protection is guaranteed to women, both preventively and in the care of victims of domestic violence”.
The event organizing team is part of the Judicial Control of Public Policies research project based on the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic: the role of the Judiciary in the implementation stage, which, in general, debates the performance of the judicial system. The project is formed by professors and students from UFRN and the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN). The event aims to enable dialogue with the research project, as it analyzes judicial control and public policies aimed at women.
“In our research, we always seek to engage in dialogue with researchers, managers and various actors who discuss the topic of the Judiciary System’s role in public policies, so that these dialogues can contribute to the theoretical and methodological repertoire of our research”, adds the event organizer. Registration is open until May 5th, through Sigaa. The event will be remote, via Google Meet, and registrants will receive the access link by email.
