DLLEM promotes film club aimed at promoting the French language at Instituto Ágora

Cinéclub Lumière, promoted by the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (DLLEM), is a project with the aim of disseminating French language culture through the projection and debate of cinematographic works. Films, documentaries and animations made in French-speaking countries are the focus of the initiative, which brings students closer to the language. The first session will take place on May 19th, at 2pm, and the second will be on July 5th, at 1:30pm, at Instituto Ágora, at UFRN. Registration can be made via Sigaa until the 19th.
As an extension event, Cinéclub Lumière was created in 2017 and is still active today. The initiative returns to action in person this month, with the films Acossado, in the first session, and The Adventures of Azur and Asmar, in the second, followed by debates, as is customary at the film club. The action motivated by the students is coordinated by professor François Weigel, PhD in Comparative Literature, who affirms the identity of classic French cinema films and the need for a discussion around them. “This time the debate will really be around historical issues related to cinema because this film, Acossado, which we are going to screen, is a milestone in French-language cinema”, the professor explains.
As a presenter of aspects of cinematographic culture from different countries, the project also intends to vary the genres of the works. “We want a diversity of geographic space: an African film, every now and then, a French film, a Belgian film, a Swiss film, the different areas of Francophony, from countries where French is one of the languages”, explains François. One of the objectives of the debates after the presentation of the works is to provide opportunities for reflections on cultural references and discuss the social issues within them. The professor also mentions the work Les Miserables, a film based on the book that exposes and raises questions about socio-geographical marginalization in metropolises and the precariousness of life, according to the event coordinator.
The action is attended by guests, such as professors Joaquim Dantas, doctor in Comparative Literature from UFRN, Juscelino Neco, comic book artist and doctor in Communication Sciences from USP, author of works such as Reanimator and Matadouro de Unicórnios, present in the first session. The teachers are part of an initiative called Selvagem Podcast, in which the debate that will take place at the Cinéclub Lumière will be recorded and broadcast. In the second session, the guest will be Literature professor Tâmara Abreu, PhD in Theory and Literary History, who will analyze the animation As Aventuras de Azur e Asmar.
