DLET and Instituto Ágora promote Jewish Culture and Thought Week

Between the 12th and 16th of August, the Department of Letters and the Ágora Institute of UFRN will hold the 1st Week of Jewish Culture and Thought in RN. Open to the internal and external public, the event takes place in partnership with the Centro Israelita do Rio Grande do Norte (Cirn) and the Federal Institute of Education, Sciences and Technology of RN (IFRN), with the aim of presenting different aspects of literature, history, philosophy, science and art produced within contemporary Jewish culture.
The program is held simultaneously at UFRN and IFRN, which host lectures on topics such as Anti-Semitism; Aspects of the Jewish religion; Contribution to Brazilian arts: the case of Nazi refugees; Dreams: neurology and Kabbalah; and Dilemmas of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. The week will also feature two exhibitions of Jewish culture and the screening of one of the films from the 23rd Jewish Film Festival “A Hebraica”, held from August 3rd to 9th in São Paulo.
The professor responsible for the project, Marcos César Tindo Barbosa, explains that the initiative arose due to the need to cover discussions about Judaism beyond the political point of view. "We want to bring dialogues about the oldest Western culture into continuous use into the academic sphere. Judaism has been present for a long time, even before the Roman Empire dominated Europe, and its contributions are disproportionate to the size of the Jewish population. They are a small people, but with a great legacy", he explains.
Registration for the I Week of Jewish Culture and Thought in RN can be made in the Integrated Academic Activities Management System (Sigaa), where the full event schedule is available.
