Motyrum coordinators launch books about people in prison

The Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature (DLLEM) and the Department of Public Policies of UFRN (DPP) will hold, on the 28th, the Humanize and Desencarcerate event for the launch of the books Un pueblo sin piernas pero que camina, by Thayane Campos, professor at the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature (DLLEM/UFRN), and From violence to prison, from the extension to hope, organized by Cláudio Jesus, professor at the Institute of Public Policies (IPP/UFRN), and Thayane Campos.
The action, aimed at the academic community, teachers, researchers and professionals who are interested in research related to prison in Brazil and Rio Grande do Norte, takes place in auditorium B of the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (CCHLA), with live broadcast on YouTube from Motyrum Penitentiário, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Registration is done at SIGeventos.
The program begins with the opening ceremony, to which authors and representatives from CCHLA/UFRN will be invited. Next, there will be a speech by the doctoral student at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and former member of the Motyrum project Anna Elisa Marques, followed by the other authors of the book.
The book Un pueblo sin piernas pero que camina: initial training of Spanish teachers in the education of young people and adults deprived of liberty is the result of Thayane Campos' doctorate. Published by the Brazilian Association of Hispanicists (ABH), based on the Mário Gonzalez Award, the most important in studies of Hispanicism in Brazil, won by the author in 2020, the work deals with the training of Spanish teachers for people deprived of liberty.
According to Thayane, the idea was to try to fill the gap that is the reflection regarding the training of Spanish teachers for this audience and to think that teaching foreign languages ​​is not a closed box, a ready-made methodology, but one that has to be adapted to them.
The book From violence to prison, from extension to hope emerged from the Motyrum extension project, led by authors Cláudio Jesus (coordinator) and Thayane Campos (deputy coordinator). Published by the publisher of the UFRN Distance Education Secretariat (Sedis), with funding from the UFRN Pro-Rector of Extension (Proex), this work is a celebration of the history of the project, whose main objective is to work with popular education with inmates.
The first part of the book is focused on research related to prison, with discussions about incarceration and public policies involving the prison system in Brazil and RN. In the second part, the focus is on extension projects that operate within the Brazilian penitentiary system focused on educational activities, such as remission of sentences for reading and higher education courses aimed at incarcerated people. The third part tells the story of Motyrum itself, which is still active.
As a result of a partnership between authors from several public universities, the idea of ​​launching it in e-book format arose from the initiative to make the material available free of charge and accessible to everyone. "We see that years of work, collectively elaborated, have been carried out. And seeing that this collective is being presented, known and recognized is a great professional and personal achievement", emphasizes Thayane Campos.
Motyrum extension project
Motyrum is a collective of UFRN extension projects that aims to carry out popular education in Human Rights under the Freirean theoretical-methodological umbrella. Created in 2005, the action, originally called Citizenship Lessons, is divided into four action groups that work with social groups in vulnerable situations. Among them, the Penitentiary Center seeks to promote dialogue between undergraduates and inmates, leading everyone to a critical reflection on concepts that tend to be trivialized in everyday life, such as: citizenship, crime, violence, Human Rights and justice.
