Cineclube PortaMaré screens and debates films at Decom

A new movement began in the UFRN Department of Social Communication (Decom/UFRN). The creation of an additional training space for students – developed by Audiovisual students –, the Cineclube PortaMaré. With discussions and discoveries about the cinematographic universe, the project has a special program of film screenings and debates, entitled Vaticínio dos echoes initials. The second session – Broken Chains – takes place on June 24th, at 2pm, in Auditorium 1 of the Department and is open to the public.
The PortaMaré Cineclube works to create a repertoire with different films and discuss cinematographic movements, a fundamental action for filmmakers in training. Furthermore, it works as a practical field in different areas of audiovisual production. The members are responsible for curating, organizing debates, producing and publicizing the sessions.
The Broken Currents session shows the films As Tears Go By (Wong Kar Wai, 1988) and The Rebels of the Neon God (Tsai Ming-liang, 1992), both the first feature films by important directors in Asian cinema. At the end of the screenings, the debate takes place on issues intrinsic to the narratives and the relationship of these works with flow cinema (audiovisual productions characterized by the construction of non-linear time).
PortaMaré Cineclube
Prophecy of Initial Echoes is the first program with different sessions and the film club's second initiative. The first screening took place in May this year, with the documentary Yellow Door: the cineclube of the 90s (Lee Hyukrae, 2023). The South Korean production about a group of students passionate about cinema inspired the name and political gesture of PortaMaré in debating filmic works collectively.
After showing the documentary, Ruy Alckmin, professor of the Audiovisual course, led a debate on the importance of film clubs. The conversation revolved around the need to create these spaces within the University which, although aimed at Audiovisual students, are also open for the participation of others interested in cinema.
