Sebastião Albano (UFRN) and Manuela Penafria (UBI) form a partnership to publish an academic book

The professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Dr. Sebastião Guilherme Albano, linked to the Postgraduate Program in Media Studies (PPgEM), and the professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Dr. Manuela Penafria, belonging to the Portuguese department LabCom – Communication and Arts, establish an academic partnership to write a joint book, with publication scheduled for 2025.
The initiative seeks to strengthen ties between Brazil and Portugal in the field of research in Media Studies and its Social Practices, as well as in Cinema, areas in which both institutions have recognized academic performance.
According to Sebastião Albano, the book revisits a seminal work for understanding the language of Lusophone documentary films. However, details about the content are being kept confidential to provide a more complete appreciation experience at the time of launch.
Manuela Penafria, on the other hand, highlights that the initiative is of great relevance and states that she is very pleased to contribute with theories about documentary cinema and filmmakers that she develops in Portugal, combining them with the studies that Dr. Sebastião carries out in Brazil.
The project has the collaboration of researcher Hélder Nóbrega, a doctoral student at PPgEM, supervised by Sebastião Albano and co-supervised by Manuela Penafria, who is part of the teachers in organizing the book. For Hélder, this is a unique opportunity to work with two cinema theorists who are part of the theoretical framework of his doctoral thesis being developed at UFRN, whose theme is focused on Northeastern Cinema.
Sebastião Albano is a member of the international research group iA*Lab CineMAtiC, a partnership between UBI and other European institutions, while Manuela Penafria is part of the Gemini study group, at UFRN. Both invited each other to work in their respective investigative associations to the detriment of guiding the thesis of Hélder Nóbrega, who still participates in the referenced research groups, both in Brazil and in Portugal, as a collaborating doctoral candidate, reinforcing the academic ties between the two institutions.
