Research generates work that connects History to the teaching of Mathematics

A post-doctoral research product developed in the Professional Master's Degree in History at UFRN (ProfHistória) generated the publication of the work “History and Mathematics to read the world”, authored by professor Graciana Ferreira Dias (UFPB) and supervised by professor Margarida Maria Dias de Oliveira (UFRN).

The work was the result of research carried out in the years 2024 and 2025 within the scope of Profhistória and is intended for those who want to understand mathematics not as an isolated and mechanical discipline, but as a cultural and living tool that helps to decipher reality.

The author proposes methodological diagrams to connect history and mathematical content, such as complex functions and numbers, promoting a cultural vision of the discipline. This strategy aims to overcome challenges such as students' lack of interest, making mathematics more creative and integrated with other areas. Examples include historical excerpts that humanize abstract concepts.

By rescuing the history behind the concepts, the book humanizes the discipline. It shows that each theorem or numbering system carries with it the culture, challenges and worldview of the people who created them.
