The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) will host, from October 23 to 25, 2024, the V International Congress of African Literatures and Cultures – Griots, in a face-to-face format. The event also takes place simultaneously, virtually, in Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe and Portugal. Registration for participation in thematic symposiums is open until August 10th, and listeners can register until October 23rd.
The event, which had its first edition on May 25, 2009, initially focused on research by Northeastern scholars in African and Afro-Brazilian literature. In this edition, the focus is to promote conference tables, working groups, theatrical and musical performances, and open discussions about love and affection in times of inequalities, wars, anti-racism, epidemics, injustice and climate justice. Griots is organized by UFRN professors Tânia Lima and Izabel Nascimento.
In 2024, the event will honor the writer from Piauí Elio Ferreira and the writer from Rio Grande do Norte Inaldete Pinheiro, in addition to bringing a literary program from Africa and Brazil to debate poetry, literature and the challenges of tradition and modernity within contemporary culture.
