In March, the 13th Cinema and Human Rights Exhibition arrives in Rio Grande do Norte and other states, inviting the public to debate the country beyond the screen. All free, the program will take place in Natal, at the Communication Laboratory (LabCom), at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), starting on the 19th. The opening ceremony starts at 6pm, followed by the screening of the film “Nas Asas da Pan Am”, by Silvio Tendler, the filmmaker honored in this edition, at 7:30 pm. The agenda runs until the 22nd.
With all regions represented in the selected film productions, the Exhibition has 18 films directed by professionals chosen because they have a direct relationship with the themes addressed on screen, such as racism and the rights of women, people with disabilities, indigenous peoples and the LGBTQIAPN+ community. The event itinerary was organized into programs divided with the titles “Homage”, “Roots”, “Seeds” and “Fruits”.
Workshops with educators are other attractions of the 13th Exhibition, whose theme is “Overcoming hate, sowing horizons”. The objective is to train multipliers, reaching more than 700 educators in the country, so that art and human rights support teaching. In Natal, the workshops take place at UFRN's own LabCom, on Rua da Saúde, Lagoa Nova, from March 18th to 21st, from 9am to 12pm, with a link to register here https://forms.gle/8sUAuEBj265JwX2C8.
In a second phase, the event will have the Difusion Show, when the programming of this 13th edition will be available online, on the InnSaei.TV streaming platform, and in cultural facilities in the participating cities, from March 25th to April 24th. The spaces, including those inside, were registered by the Ministry of Culture, which organizes the Exhibition with the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship.
The production is by the Department of Cinema and Video at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), with local production by the Research Group on Audiovisual Political Economy (EPA), the Research Group on Language, Memory and Representation (GILMAR), the Human Rights Reference Center (CRDH), the Postgraduate Program in Media Studies (PPGEM) and the Department of Social Communication (DECOM) at UFRN.
Free programming
On the 19th, the program for the 13th Cinema and Human Rights Exhibition begins with “Nas Asas da Pan Am” (2020, 115 min, free), by Silvio Tendler, at 7:30 pm, in Auditorium 1 and 2 of LabCom at UFRN.
On the 20th, at 2pm, the program “Frutos”, aimed at children and young people, shows “Um Filme de Verão” (2019, 95 min, 14 years old), followed by a debate, at 3:30 pm. At 7pm, it’s time for the “Raízes” program, featuring “Travessia” (2017, 5 min, free), “Filha Natural” (2018-19, 16 min, free), “Our mother was an actress” (2022, 26 min, 12 years), “Mãri Hi – A Árvore do Sonho” (2023, 18 min, free), “What can a body do?” (2020, 14 min, free) and “The dust of little secrets” (2012, 20 min, 14 years), with a debate afterwards, at 8:40 pm.
On the 21st, at 2pm, the “Frutos” program shows “Tesouro Quilombola” (2021, 23 min, free), “Mutirão, O Filme” (2022, 10 min, free), “Cósmica” (2022, 7 min, free) and “O Pato” (2022, 11 min, 14 years), with debates. Then, at 7pm, the “Sementes” program brings “Ribeirinhos do Asfalto” (2011, 26 min, free), “Adão, Eva e o Fruto Proibido” (2021, 20 min, 14 years), “Our spirits continue to arrive” (2021, 15 min, free), “I will make myself heard” (2022, 30 min, 10 years), “Writing and Resistance: Maria Firmina dos Reis and Conceição Evaristo” (2021, 26 min, free).
On the 22nd, at 7pm, the “Homage” session will take place with another film by Silvio Tendler: “A Bolsa ou a Vida” (2021, 102 min, 10 years).
