Between the 19th and 21st of June, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) hosts the XII National Meeting of Media History, with the theme Media and the Strata of Time: memory, present and future of the media. The event has, in local organization, the participation of professors from the Department of Communication at UFRN, Valquiria Kneipp and Daniel Meirinho. The event is held by the Brazilian Association of Media History Researchers (ALCAR) with the aim of bringing together researchers who carry out research and interconnect the fields of History and Communication and who seek to fill gaps in the historiography of the field across the country. The intention of the carrying out institutions is to provide a harmonious environment for the exchange of knowledge and strengthen research on the history of communication in all its nuances.
For three days, topics related to communication and media practices and their relationships with the construction of memory and history of the field, and with the deontological processes, which mark each of the areas involved, will be debated. The program includes debates on Communication and Social Movements – contemporary historical panorama and also Contributions of José Marques de Melo to the field of Communication.
In 2019, the Meeting will feature nine Thematic Groups (GTs) divided into: History of Journalism; History of Advertising and Institutional Communication; History of Digital Media; History of Printed Media; History of Sound Media; History of Audiovisual Media; History of Visual Media; History of Alternative Media and Media Historiography.
The last national meeting brought together 468 participants from all Brazilian regions, as well as researchers from Portugal and France. On the occasion, 306 articles were presented, a total of 486 authors, distributed in 46 thematic sessions. This is the third time that the event has been held in a city in the Northeast. The first time was in São Luís (MA), in 2006; and the second in the city of Fortaleza (CE), in 2009.
