UFRN receives donation from Novo Jornal’s journalistic collection

Novo Jornal's journalistic collection was officially donated to the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) on the morning of this Monday, 18th, in a solemn signing session, in the Superior Collegiate Room. The transfer of material aims to adequately store the press and improve access to digitized content for the population.
Dean Ângela Maria Paiva Cruz thanked the owner of Novo Jornal and retired professor of the Journalism course, Cassiano Arruda Câmara, for choosing UFRN to donate the collection, especially at a time when the educational institution celebrates 60 years. The manager recalled that the work of archiving copies of the periodical was made possible due to the University's work with senators Fátima Bezerra, Garibaldi Alves and Agripino Maia and federal deputies Rafael Motta, Rogério Marinho and Zenaide Maia, through parliamentary amendments.
Cassiano Arruda Câmara stated that there is no better place for the collection to remain than at UFRN. The journalist acknowledged that he participated in the donation ceremony excited to be depositing the newspaper, to which he dedicated himself for eight years. “Novo Jornal meant the realization of a dream and, from a journalistic point of view, it was the portrait of the transition from the printed newspaper to the internet”.
With the transfer of the collection, the online material will be in the repository of the Image Laboratory (Labim) at UFRN, a platform open for consultation, and the physical collection, on paper, is already under the custody of the Laboratory for Restoration and Conservation of Books and Historical Documents (Labre).

Journalistic Collections

In addition to Novo Jornal, which began circulating on November 17, 2009 and had its last edition printed on October 27, 2017, UFRN is also responsible for the documentation process of Diário de Natal, which was published from September 18, 1939 to October 2, 2012. The director of CCHLA, Prof. Maria das Graças Soares Rodrigues and vice Prof. Sebastião Faustino Pereira Filho, attended the event.
