The Department of Communication (Decom) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) shows the film “A flor do buriti” on Monday (1st), at 3 pm, in auditorium 1. The session is free and is part of a joint action between Embaúba Filmes and the Research Group on Audiovisual Political Economy (Epa!) and the Research Group on Language, Memory and Representation (GILMaR), both linked to Decom.
The film, directed by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. Although the national premiere is scheduled for July 4, Natal is not included in the list of cities that will receive the documentary, making this screening a unique opportunity.
“A flor do buriti” tells the story of the Krahô indigenous people, who in 1940 faced a massacre perpetrated by farmers in the north of Tocantins. In 1969, during the Brazilian Dictatorship, the children of survivors were forced to join a military unit. The documentary highlights the Krahô's ongoing struggle against old and new threats, and their daily resistance in their land marked by violence.
