UFRN shows award-winning documentary about cangaceira Sila

The Visual Anthropology Center (Navis), at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), presents the award-winning documentary Between Bandits and Heroes: The cangaceira woman, produced by professor Lisabete Coradini, from the Department of Anthropology, which tells the story of Ilda Ribeiro de Souza, Sila, a cangaçeira from the Lampião gang. The meeting will take place on the 28th, at 3pm, on the Center's YouTube channel, marking the beginning of the commemorative painting The Image Constituting Itself in Memory, of Navis' 20th anniversary.
With music by singer Babal Galvão and set in locations in the hinterland of the Northeast, the documentary invites everyone to learn about Sila's life story. "It's a record about the life of this cangaceira woman, showing everyone what the women's struggle was like, how she had to abandon her son and her family to continue with the gang. It has very impactful scenes, where the issue of orality is very present. She talks about the place where she was, where she lived and all her experiences", says Lisabete.
The teacher highlights the importance of remembering Sila’s trajectory for our time. "The role of a cangaceira woman is of paramount importance. The documentary, today, is a record of memory of a period, a time in the 1930s in a Brazil that had strong social movements, resistance and struggle. It is a very impactful film that raises many questions, I am sure everyone will like it."
