Institutional Racism is the topic of a seminar at CCHLA

The Department of Public Policies will hold, on December 3rd, a seminar open to the internal and external community of UFRN to learn what it is and how to combat Institutional Racism. With the theme  Crossroads and Considerations on Institutional Racism: Public Policies and the Question of Race, the event will feature the participation of two experts on the subject, Larissa Borges and Tricia Calmon, and will be held from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, in Auditorium 2 of Labplan/CCHLA. Registration can be made through Sigaa, with 40 places available.
According to the 2005 Program to Combat Institutional Racism, there is a “failure […] in providing a professional and appropriate service to people due to their color, culture, racial or ethnic origin” in companies and corporations. Through this central issue, the seminar will discuss actions that cause people from discriminated racial or ethnic groups to be at a disadvantage in accessing benefits generated by the State and other institutions.
Designed as a moment of reflection, awareness and adoption of new practices, the event will also feature the launch of the book Education, Human Rights and the Public Field, from 6:30 pm to 7 pm, organized by Ilzver de Matos Oliveira, Gabriela Maria Rebouças and Edgilson Tavares de Araújo, from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS).
About the speakers
Larissa Borges worked in the Coordination of the Juventude Viva Plan/General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, a program that contained actions to combat Institutional Racism. She was also a member of the Conexões de Saberes Research, Teaching and Extension Center and was part of the State Subsecretariat for Policies for Women in the Government of Minas Gerais. Tricia Calmon, in turn, was coordinator of the Corra pro Abraço Program/Secretariat of Justice and Human Rights and Social Development of the State of Bahia, advisor to the Baobá Fund for Racial Equity and member of the Interinstitutional Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of Laws 10,639/2003 and 11,645/2008, chaired by the Public Ministry of the State of Bahia.
