Navis promotes workshop on Film Ethnography

The Visual Anthropology Center (Navis), at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), promotes, between May 11th and July 20th, the Film Ethnographic Workshop: methods, techniques and instruments of audiovisual ethnography. The extension course will be held in 10 meetings, every Wednesday, from 6pm to 9pm, in a remote format. The workshop has the support of the Dean of Extension (Proex) at UFRN, and the research group in Visual Anthropology, Arts, Ethnographies and Documentaries (Avaedoc) at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). Registration is available through Sigaa.
The extension course aims to collaborate with theoretical-methodological discussions of the debate on culture and society from the current perspective of Visual Anthropology, through a collaborative process, with readings, film screenings, equipment operation and field investigation. The workshop aims to bring together students and teachers in the search for methodological and technical paths for learning and improving the production of filmic ethnographies.
In this sense, the workshop methodology model contrasts with the traditional model (active teacher and passive students) and aims to provide a collaborative learning environment where everyone is an agent for building collective knowledge. At the same time, the idea of a workshop refers to a practical workplace of an artisanal and in-process nature, where one builds and learns in practice. To this end, it will take place in different environments, hybridizing resources, such as: remote meetings in virtual rooms, readings and viewing of films, in-person immersion meetings in the field and in the editing studio.
The workshop, taught by professors Oswaldo Giovannini Júnior (UFPB) and Lisabete Coradini (UFRN), is the first activity of the III Latin American Ethnographic Film Exhibition, coordinated by Gilmar Santana (PPGCS/NAVIS/UFRN), with the participation of master's and doctoral students who are part of Navis.
