LEHS celebrates 10 years of creation with book launch

The Social History Experimentation Laboratory (LEHS), linked to the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (CCHLA), completes its 10 years of creation with the launch of books. The event to commemorate the date takes place this Thursday, 25th, at 6:30 pm, in auditorium B of the CCHLA. The Laboratory is a space for intellectual production within the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) that focuses on research on the Colonial and Imperial period of Brazil.
One of the books launched will be Rio Grande (do Norte): História e Historiografia, prepared based on research carried out by LEHS. The publication deals with topics such as the abandonment of the donatary captaincy, land occupation, politics in the empire, the importance of the municipal council, indigenous resistance and other subjects relevant to the state's history. José Evangelista Fagundes and Carmen Alveal are coordinators of the Laboratory and believe that the work is of interest not only to historians, but to lovers of the history of Rio Grande do Norte.
Also released will be Senhorio Coloniais, by Carmen Alveal, Das Ribeiras o Tesouro, da Revenue o Sustento, by Libya Barbosa and Between deer, sheep and ants: conflict for land ownership in Ribeira do Ceará-Mirim and conceptions of possessive mentality, 1725-1761, by Ana Lunara da Silva.
The projects that the Laboratory develops are linked to the construction of databases and transcriptions of handwritten documents that report on the colonial and imperial periods. The idea is to produce knowledge about the history of Rio Grande do Sul and show the relevance of facts and social, economic and political processes, with the aim of democratizing the availability and consultation of information relating to the history of Brazil with a focus on Rio Grande do Norte.
Carmen Alveal, one of the coordinators of the event and professor at the Department of History, explains the importance of studying the country's past: "By studying Brazil's past we can understand the present and also understand the processes that explain why some aspects have changed and others have not. Therefore, historical knowledge is fundamental to even thinking about public policies", she highlights.
The event, which will be attended by the head of Department, Conceição Fraga, of the Department of History, and the deputy director of CCHLA, Josenildo Soares Bezerra, will be open to the public, with limited places and registrations made through Sigaa. The start of the ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 pm, with the presence of the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Rubens Maribondo. At 6:45 pm there will be presentations of the activities carried out at LEHS and at 7 pm, the presentation of books written by its members. At 7:30 pm, ten copies of the books presented will be drawn and, after that, the event will end.
