Humanitas Institute completes 3 years

The Humanitas Institute (IH/UFRN), an academic unit specialized in the area of ​​Human Sciences, completes three years since its creation. Participating in the IH are professors-researchers, professors from the permanent active staff and retirees from UFRN, volunteer associate researchers, national and foreign researcher-collaborators and visiting researchers.
Alipio de Sousa Filho, permanent professor at UFRN and director of IH, says that the importance of the Institute is to be able to be a space for the production and exchange of theoretical-philosophical-scientific knowledge from an interdisciplinary and integrated perspective. This enhances possibilities for deeper knowledge of the social reality of our societies and life in them. Research, teaching, extension, debates and publications, from this perspective, fulfill the university's vocation of offering high-level knowledge to society.
“The fusion of theoretical contributions from different areas or disciplines, as well as the fusion of different theoretical understandings that can be integrated into one's own way of thinking, elevates scientific knowledge and human thought to levels that allow for a deeper and broader understanding of the world, life and history”, states the professor.
The existence of the Humanitas Institute expands the intellectual and scientific training offerings that UFRN offers to society. Currently, IH offers an undergraduate course, which is the Interdisciplinary Bachelor's Degree in Humanities. The idea is to be a training opportunity not only for younger people who enter for their first university education, but also an opportunity for those who, more mature and even with some previous training, wish to return to university for the pleasure of philosophical-scientific life, studies and who wish to dedicate themselves to the debate of ideas.
Humanitas Institute
The Humanitas Institute was created in April 2019 by resolution of the University Council (Consuni), after approval of its creation by the Teaching, Research and Extension Council (Consepe) and the Board of Directors (Consad). Started by a group of professors from the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (CCHLA) at UFRN, previously members of the Department of Social Sciences (CISO), eager for a multidisciplinary intellectual work space, integrating knowledge and scientific vocations; mainly intended for the production of scientific knowledge that has an impact on the debate of ideas in society.
For Alipio, “the idea of ​​an institute of integrated studies, as Humanitas is called, is also important because it aims to be a space in which the departmentalization of knowledge and academic Taylorism do not prevail, and, replacing these practices, we have conceptions and practices of production and teaching of theoretical-philosophical-scientific knowledge from an integrated, interdisciplinary or even transdisciplinary perspective.”
