Ferdinand de Saussure

The Swiss Ferdinand de Saussure, born in Geneva in 1857, is, unquestionably, the most frequently evoked name when it comes to 20th century Linguistics.
His first works published in the 19th century dealt with the comparative grammar of Indo-European languages, according to the hegemonic linguistic paradigm at the time.
In 1878, he published, in Leipzig, Mémoire sur le système primitif des voyelles dans les langues Indo-Européennes (Study on the primitive system of vowels in Indo-European languages).
In 1881, he published his doctoral thesis De l’emploi du génitif absolu en sanscrit (On the use of the absolute genitive in Sanskrit).
After a season in Germany, he went to Paris to continue his training at the École Pratique des Hautes Études. In Paris, he had a fine career.
In 1892, he returned to Geneva and began teaching at the University of Geneva, comparative grammar of the Germanic languages, Greek and Latin, Sanskrit and general linguistics.
