The book club Horto de Letras, a proposal from the Academic Center for Letters (CCHLA/UFRN), will hold, next Friday, the 29th, its first in-person meeting. Participants must attend auditorium D of the CCHLA, where there will be debates about two works by Oswald de Andrade: Manifesto Antropófágo and Manifesto da Poesia Pau-Brasil. The debates will be taught by professor Jaqueline Castilho Machuca, professor of the Literature course and coordinator of the event.
According to Jaqueline, who is also responsible for the project, the choice of these works for the debate at this meeting is an allusion to the centenary of the Modern Art Week, an important artistic-cultural manifestation in the history of Brazilian production. In addition to the presentation of the manifestos, Castilho mentions that a projection and discussion of poems are also present in the event's program.
The habit of reading has become increasingly scarce among the Brazilian population. According to Agência Brasil, the average number of books consumed by Brazilians is just 2.5 entire books per year. The project initiated by the Department of Literature at UFRN, not only encourages the practice of reading but also the debate of the works, which allows for interdisciplinary interaction, since all readers, teachers or not, are admitted to the book club meetings, providing many argumentative possibilities, with different biases, around the works.
“The first meeting took place remotely in March 2021 and, since then, the curator has selected works with different formats and authors: theater, short stories, novels from Portugal, Brazil and Mozambique”, says professor Jaqueline. The plurality of genres and formats is a strong characteristic of the project, which aims to boost its debates with periodic meetings and literary works in their most varied styles.
As this is the first in-person meeting of Horto de Letras, only 60 places are available, as the meeting will follow current biosafety protocols. Readers in general, both from the internal and external community, are invited to participate in the discussions. For a fruitful exchange of literary and cultural knowledge, it is recommended that interested parties read the indicated texts. Those who are interested can sign up directly on the Sigaa page.
