Georisco Group forms a partnership with UFPR to monitor Covid-19 in Paraná

The GEORISCO research group, from the Disaster Research Center (NUPED), is leading a task force to produce monitoring maps for the COVID-19 pandemic. Entitled CoronaRisco Task Force, it has produced monitoring maps of confirmed cases and deaths in Brazil, the Northeast Region, Rio Grande do Norte and Natal.

The research that has achieved national repercussion established partnerships to produce maps for the state of Paraná and the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba. The maps were produced by Ariadne Farias, PhD in Environment and Development from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), in collaboration with Prof. Lutiane Almeida, from the Department of Geography at UFRN and coordinator of Georisk.

"It is an initial partnership for the production of maps to monitor COVID-19 cases in Paraná. The importance of this is that geographic information is very important for planning actions to prevent contagion and also in organizing medical teams in the states and metropolitan regions", stated Lutiane.

This work is the result of technical cooperation between researchers from UFRN and the Higher Institute of Administration and Economics of Mercosul – ISAE, with the support of the Professional Master's Degree in Governance and Sustainability, in which Ariadne Farias works as a teacher. The main objective is to strengthen the Brazilian scientific research network to act in communicating the risks of spreading COVID-19, generating qualified information for the entire society, thus seeking to reduce the socio-environmental impacts generated by the global pandemic.
