The Environmental Dynamics, Risk and Spatial Planning Research Group (GEORISCO), from the Department of Geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), coordinated by professor Lutiane Almeida published an article in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, in partnership with professor Ana Maria Araújo (DEMA/UFC), Prof. Jörn Birkmann (IREUS/University of Stuttgart) and Dr. Torsten Welle (Lübeck Forestry Academy, Germany).
The scientific article “DRIB Index 2020: Validating and enhancing disaster risk indicators in Brazil”, reveals a set of disaster risk indicators in Brazil, seeking to analyze spatial and statistical risk patterns in Brazilian municipalities.
Furthermore, it seeks to promote the use of relevant data and practical information supporting the development of appropriate indicators that are essential in the prevention of disasters in various national locations.
"Brazil is not among the countries most exposed and vulnerable to natural hazards, such as Japan, Haiti or Chile. However, the frequency and magnitude of disaster events, as well as losses, damages and deaths associated with natural hazards and vulnerability indices in various regions of the country have increased", highlights the article.
