UFRN Debate Group is an international highlight

The Competitive Debate Union (UDC-RN), a project linked to the Center for Applied Social Sciences (CCSA), at UFRN, stood out in the 2nd World Championship of debates in Portuguese, held from April 23 to 28, at the University of Lisbon.
The UDC team was represented by UFRN members, Giovanni Begossi, from the 9th period of the Law course and Gabriel Gomes, from the 3rd period of the Bachelor's degree in Science & Technology. Giovanni was invited to participate as Head of Adjudication, responsible for creating the motions (topics to be debated), judging and giving the results of the highest level rooms, as well as the elimination rounds, and was also the main judge of the championship's grand final.
Gabriel, on the other hand, won the title of the beginners' final – a category for debaters under 1 year old – together with Alice Bertoni, from the University of São Paulo (USP). For him, it was a remarkable moment, even though it was about three months after his debut in debates: "Having won this title was incredible. We were thinking that the best possibility was to just reach the final and that was already a good size, and we gained a lot of confidence during the tournament."
Gabriel also highlights that participation in UFRN's debate projects can help students and professionals from different areas: "I think being able to share and confront ideas, information and arguments is surreal and develops any type of person, regardless of the role they are going to do. It's something that will greatly enhance you, both professionally and personally."
UDC is the first Brazilian team to win this title in international competitions. Other information about UDC can be found on UDC-RN's Facebook and Instagram or via email at udc-rn@hotmail.com.
