GPP promotes lecture on mental health

The coordination of the Public Policy Management course (GPP), at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), will hold a lecture on “Mental health, suicide prevention and support for the bereaved” at 4:30 pm on September 22nd. The meeting will be held in person in the auditorium of the Institute of Public Policies (IPP), presented by Regina Pereira Ramos, volunteer and former coordinator of the Center for the Valorization of Life (CVV).
The event takes place in Yellow September, recognized as a month of awareness, coping and prevention of suicide around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out in a report published in June 2021 that suicide is one of the main causes of mortality in the world. In 2019, approximately 700,000 people took their own lives, which is equivalent to one in every 100 deaths.
In Brazil, it is estimated that around 32 deaths by suicide are recorded each day, a number that could be 30% higher due to underreporting. Furthermore, the pandemic was a factor that harmed people's mental health, a fact evidenced by the 41% increase in depression diagnoses in the country between the pre-pandemic period and the first quarter of 2022, according to research carried out by Vital Strategies and the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel).
The Centro de Valorização à Vida (CVV) is a non-profit entity founded in 1962 in São Paulo and has the help of 4,200 volunteers who work with the aim of alleviating the causes of anxiety and depression, valuing life and preventing suicide. The service is free, working 24 hours a day and can be done by phone, email, chat or in person.
