Highlighting a set of musical works produced in South American countries in recent decades, UFRN Geography professor Alessandro Dozena published a dossier with the title Geography and Musicalities of Latin America in the sixth edition of Punto Sur Magazine, in Buenos Aires. The project was coordinated by Alessandro Dozena alongside professors Agustín Arosteguy, from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Lucas Panitz, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and Julia Andrade, from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
A collection of musical scenes in graphite and watercolor by artist Edgar Fonseca makes up the cover of the dossier. In front of a choro circle in Rio de Janeiro, Edgar portrayed musicians in full performance. For its fifth edition, the magazine prepared the thematic dossier on the topic, with the aim of promoting reflections on the relationships between these two spheres.
Based on an initiative by the Editorial Committee of Punto Sur Magazine, in 2019, Alessandro Dozena was invited to participate in the organization of the dossier together with three other researchers from universities in Brazil and Argentina. Punto Sur is the most recent publication from the UBA Institute of Geography and aims to encourage debate and proposals around the wide variety of issues and problems that currently make up the field of geography.
With the purpose of putting artistic and geographical discourses into dialogue, the dossier establishes directions for what prevents sounds and music from drifting in other directions. “We believe that Latin America, due to its rich musical, innovative and transcultural culture, linked to ethnic knowledge, but also to global movements in society, offers us fertile ground for a renewed understanding of spatial and cultural dynamics”, points out Alessandro.
