DesCom holds event with quilombola thinker from Piauí

The DesCom research project, from the Department of Communication (Decom) at UFRN, is holding this Thursday, the 14th, the II Seminar on Subaltern Epistemologies and Communication, with the theme of Black Consciousness and Counter-Colonization: the confluence of knowledge for a biointeractive life. The event will be held from 4pm, in the Decom Auditorium, and will feature a debate by Antônio Bispo dos Santos, a quilombola from Piauí who is part of the network of masters and teachers at the University of Brasília (UnB).
Organized by the research project Subaltern Epistemologies and Communication – DesCom, the seminar will be part of the Black Consciousness Week program of the Department of Social Communication at UFRN.
Opened by the researcher from the Postgraduate Program in Media Studies, Denise de Carvalho (PPgEM/UFRN), the event will feature a poetic intervention and the launch of the book Colonization, Quilombo: modes and meanings, by Antônio Bispo. The work is part of a collection of works published by the National Institute of Science and Technology for Inclusion in Teaching and Research (INCTI), carried out by masters from traditional indigenous, Afro-Brazilian and popular communities.
Nicknamed Nêgo Bispo, the author is the main guest at the seminar. He proposes valuing the biointeraction common to quilombolas and traditional and native peoples, in a Western modernity that tends to ignore care for the environment. The quilombolas' view of colonization and resistance against racism are also topics discussed by Bishop.
In addition to being an activist, Antônio Bispo is a farmer, resident of Quilombo Saco-Curtume, located in the municipality of São João do Piauí/PI, in the semi-arid region of Piauí. He currently works in the State Coordination of Quilombola Communities of Piauí (CECOQ/PI) and in the National Coordination of Articulation of Black Rural Quilombola Communities (CONAQ).
