The Department of Philosophy (DFIL/UFRN) is holding, from January 30th to February 1st, the 4th Ibero-American Seminar on Neoplatonic Studies. The event's central theme is: Mysticism and Politics and takes place in a hybrid format, with in-person activity at Instituto Ágora and online on the YouTube channel of the Postgraduate Program in Philosophy (PPGFIL). To participate, you must register with Sigaa.
On the first day of the event, the action begins at 10 am with the lectures: La vía rational de ascenso al Bien en Plotino, given by Malena Tonelli, from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata; Asimilation, deification and mystical experience in Plotinus, with Marcelo Andrés Poblete, from the National University of San Juan; Plotinus and the justification of the political power of Emperor Juliano, the philosopher-king, with the participation of Bruno Camilo de Oliveira, from the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido; and Mysticism and anarchy: neoplatonic considerations, taught by Cícero Bezerra, from the Federal University of Sergipe.
The activity continues in the afternoon, from 3pm to 6pm, with the second session of Ancient Neoplatonism. The event continues with the lecture Mystic Exégesis and ‘political’ Disposition of the Soul in Proclo, led by José Maria Zamora Calvo, from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, followed by the presentation Prendersi cura degli uomini secondo il mode che è proprio degli dèi: l’ascesa dalle virtù politiche alle virtù teurgiche nella Vita Procli di Marino, with Claudia Gianturco, from the Università degli Studi di Salerno. The last lectures of the day are Apofatism in Proclean philosophy: consequences of an imparticipated One, presented by Suelen Pereira da Cunha, from the Federal University of Ceará, and Autarquia y mística en Proclo, taught by José María Nieva, from the National University of Tucumán. The complete schedule is available on the event page on Sigaa.
The seminar has been held since 2000 and is supported by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes). Oscar Federico Bauchwitz, professor at DFIL and organizer of the event, states that Neoplatonism is not widespread in Brazil, but that PPGFIL has studied the topic and supports actions on the subject. “The relevance of this activity is, mainly, to establish academic relationships of scientific cooperation”, he concludes.
