The Journalism course at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), through the Planning and Research in Journalism Laboratory (COM0209) discipline, launches the 11th edition of Tabu magazine. The event takes place from 3pm on December 14th in Auditorium I of the Department of Social Communication (Decom).
The magazine is a biannual laboratory publication developed by students enrolled in the discipline, which is taught by professor Janaina Barcelos. This semester, Tabu's launch event will feature characters who appear in reports with the aim of sharing their experiences and interacting with the academic community.
This semester's guests are: Meyriane Costa de Oliveira – representing the Human Rights section, with a focus on indigenous education; Marconi da Silva Castelo Branco – on theater and appreciation of art in the Culture section; Ciro Pedroza – about Periferia, giving the Rocas neighborhood as an example; Ceres Dantas – about sanitation, in the Environment section.
The schedule for the Tabu launch event begins at 3pm on the 14th with the reception of students in Auditorium I at Decom. At 3:30 pm there will be a lecture by guests from the editorial offices, who will discuss the topics covered in the reports. At 5pm, a debate will be held with those present. The event will close and have a final celebration at 5:30 pm.
Taboo magazine
According to its proposal, Tabu magazine seeks to be a space in which the defense of democracy and collective interests is the main topic of discussion and focus of the journalistic approach. As an editorial principle, the publication seeks to fight for the expansion of voices from historically silenced social classes and is willing to offer greater openness to debates that deviate from the conventional approach of traditional information vehicles.
Professor Janaina Barcelos informs that the production of Tabu takes place throughout the semester (2022.2), with the definition of the agenda, including investigation, photos and writing. Furthermore, the layout was made by a journalism student from the previous semester's class. "Students also review the art and promote it on social media. They are second-year students, so it is a new, challenging and enriching experience", explains the teacher.
The magazine's target audience is minority groups in the city of Natal and the metropolitan region, and can reach other potential readers. The magazine is also interested in being read by journalism students from the State and other regions, since it is a laboratory vehicle, that is, a space for exercising journalistic practice and exchanging experiences between students.
