Deart promotes Disability Aesthetics week

The Department of Arts (Deart/UFRN) promotes, from May 22nd to 26th, the Disability Aesthetics Studies Week, offering two extension events and a course. The actions will take place in the morning and evening shifts in the Deart building and in other external spaces. Registration can be done on Sigaa.
The events propose discussion about the politics and social and philosophical aesthetics involved in the process of creating art and addressing the lack of accessibility in artistic and pedagogical practices, with a focus on teacher training. One of the highlights of the week is the screening of Sola, a short film by professor Carolina Teixeira, director of the event and a reference in Brazilian performing arts on disability and accessibility. Also by Carolina is the show Extrema Direita, a monologue that explores the difficulties that people with disabilities (PWD) face when trying to make art in Brazil. The scenic direction is by Maurício Motta.
Far Right is a complementary action to a proposal for an extension course entitled The aesthetics of disability: creative-investigative processes in the performing arts for the disabled body in an impossible situation, which will be held on the first days of the week. The projects are the result of Carolina's research, which investigates body creation for PWD in the performing arts; theater, dance and performance. Her work seeks to find situations in which limitations and deficiencies become elements that produce creative actions.
 
According to professor Makarios Maia Barbosa, coordinator of the event, the focus of the events is to promote accessibility and diversity in art. "The performing arts are a special place for the manifestation of a critical assessment of the colonization of efficiency policies, which exclude, erase, destroy and exterminate. The arts must be a space of welcome, reflection and respect for everyone, everyone", he states.
In addition to presentations in conventional spaces, scenic occupations will be carried out in external spaces, seeking to resize the participant's capacity for improvisation. The complete schedule can be seen on the event page on Sigaa.
