The Department of Arts (Deart) promotes the course Urban Dances: historical aspects and breaking instructions, in which the historical aspects of them are presented and explained, in addition to focusing on breaking. With the aim of sharing knowledge about the origins of urban dances and their development to date, the course will provide an introduction to the form of breaking, also known as breakdance. The performance period is from April 29th to July 29th, taking place in a hybrid format.
When talking about the historical aspects of urban dances, Michael Stefferson, course teacher and expert in breaking, will clarify their development and that of hip hop, which is also part of the modalities. Style is one of the sports at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), an event that has brought together young people aged 15 to 18 since 2010. Furthermore, breakdance was made official by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2020 as a debut modality at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Michael, in addition to being a bboy — a term used to define people who breakdance — is a teacher at the NGO Motivar and participates in a crew, a group in which breakdance dancers come together who can participate in competitions. The teacher proposes to expose the vocabulary and way of organizing breaking not only to undergraduate dance students, but also to any external audience who are interested in the style.
The course schedule includes, firstly, breaking instructions and training, which will be carried out in person at Deart, on Fridays from 2pm to 4pm, between April and July. The part in which the history of the style and the aspects that formed it are presented will be held remotely, in fortnightly meetings on Saturdays, from May 14th to July 23rd, between 3pm and 5pm. More information about the course is available on Sigaa.
