Offer the opportunity free of charge to young people and adults, in situations of economic vulnerability, to realize their dream of entering a university to develop an academic and professional trajectory. This is what motivated the creation of the Cursinho Popular Dona Militana, an extension action coordinated by the professor from the UFRN History Department, Margarida Dias with regular classes held at the Professor Luiz Soares State School, in the Dix-Sept Rosado neighborhood, West Zone, in Natal. Classes started last April and it is still possible to enroll new students exclusively through the link.

"In the outskirts, the balance between work and study in high school, the lack of structure and teachers, in addition to the lack of future prospects makes entering university a distant dream. The popular course is a way of trying to reduce inequalities to make this dream come true", recalls the project coordinator.

The project was born in the second half of 2021 with the proposal to offer lessons on the contents of the National High School Exam (Enem) to public school students who face many adverse scenarios for preparation on equal terms with all candidates. From 2022 onwards, with the support of the UFRN Dean of Extension and the approval of a specific notice from the RN Research Support Foundation (Fapern), the project gained a new dimension with the offering of regular classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Classes are taught by undergraduates from the 5th period of the various UFRN degrees who add pedagogical experiences to their academic careers.

"With the financial support received, we were able to pay undergraduate students, purchase teaching materials, in addition to offering snacks to students who attend the project. We also left a concrete benefit to the school with the purchase of air conditioners for the auditorium", highlighted Margarida Dias.

In almost three years of operation, Cursinho Popular Dona Militana was fundamental in the approval of several students who are currently studying higher education at UFRN itself and other public institutions.

Graduates of the various UFRN degrees who wish to be part of the project and are already studying from the 5th period can contact us by phone: 99710-7852 or on Instagram @cpdonamilitana.
