The UFRN Comics Club will hold its monthly meeting next Thursday, 29th, at 5pm, at the Mahalila café, located next to the Central Campus. The work chosen for the month of September is V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore. After the presentation, the group opens the conversation for a dynamic debate about the script and artistic composition of the comic. Interested parties can register on Sigaa.
Subtitled The Secret Society of Gutters, the Comics Club is a project of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (DLLEM), of the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (CCHLA/UFRN), coordinated by professor Katia Aily Franco Camargo. The initiative aims to promote debate and interest in comic books, focusing on great representative works of this genre, which stands out for its artistic boldness and for interrogating issues in contemporary society.
“The Comics Club seeks to encourage the reading of comics and create a space to bring together readers of this genre with the aim of breaking down prejudices regarding comics, showing the plurality and complexity of this art form”, says Gabriel Lucas Martins Cavalcanti, project monitor.
Even though it seeks to fuel discussions in a light way, the DLLEM project raises thought-provoking perspectives that can illuminate the specificities of the comic textual genre. Furthermore, readers' imagination will be worked beyond the meaning established in the story's vignettes, aiming to develop participants' interpretative skills.
The meetings consisting of the presentation of the works and the debate with the public will be led by some volunteer members of the project team. Once the reading sessions are over, small visual arts exhibitions will be held at the Mahalila café itself, by students and volunteer members of the public, based on the works discussed. The event is aimed at students in the areas of Literature, the Department of Arts (Deart) and others interested in comics.
