Reading club holds first meeting after pandemic restrictions

The Book Is On The Table (TBOT) reading club, held by students of the English and French Literature course and coordinated by professor Sandra Erickson, from the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature (DLLEM/CCHLA), invites students and other members of the internal and external community to participate in the first in-person post-pandemic meeting. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 31st, at 2pm, in room F4 of sector 2.
The event will focus on the poem The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe. Ana Beatriz Bulcão, monitor at TBOT, explains that the poem was chosen due to the author's life trajectory and his enormous contribution to the fiction genre. "He is a writer who fits perfectly with our club's proposal. In the future, we intend to receive suggestions from the public, but, as it is the first meeting in a long time, we chose a special work for us, which shows what we are coming for", he points out.
Students who participate in the club see the meetings as a space to practice the language without fear and trepidation, where it is possible to express themselves openly about large and small works of English literature. "We actually read in English, but we welcome anyone, whether they are proficient or not, and want to learn more about the language, literature, or who are simply looking for friends with the same hobby. That's what the club is about, it's discovering, it's making mistakes, it's reading that book rated two or five stars. It's talking and being heard", highlights Ana Beatriz.
According to the project coordinator, it aims to have a transdisciplinary perspective, connecting topics and discussions from different literary genres. The intention is to read and discuss texts selected by the participants, both in the so-called academic or canonical options, as well as those that, still on the margins of these spaces, have the aesthetic potential to be there, but have been subordinated by the more conservative and colonizing aspects of what we call canon.
The event is open to those interested in reading works of fiction produced in the English language. Registration will remain open until the day of the event. To register and obtain more information, you can access the Instagram page via @Bookclub.ufrn or fill out the registration form.
