The Reading Club extension project, from the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (DLLEM) at UFRN, in partnership with Livraria Cooperativa Cultural, will hold this Wednesday, the 20th, the discussion of the first work of the book club Banquete de Livros. The book chosen is The Handmaid’s Tale, 1985, by Canadian Margaret Atwood, which became popular recently due to the TV series produced by Hulu. The event takes place in the Mini Auditorium of the Zila Mamede Central Library, at 4:30 pm.
The book is set in a dystopian future in which a group of Christian fundamentalists establishes a theocratic government, the Republic of Gilead, in what had previously been the United States. In this new system, women are marginalized and subjugated, divided into different categories according to the roles they must perform in that society. We follow the plot from the point of view of Offred, a woman who, because she is fertile, falls into the category of Handmaids, whose task is to procreate. The protagonist narrates the atrocities experienced under this oppressive system, while remembering her past and evaluating the conditions that allowed the rise of the conservative group.
The Reading Club project aims to promote reflection on reading as a libertarian and transformative act. Initially, the literary club offers meetings to discuss works, bringing together readers with the same tastes. The Club's next meetings take place in April, with the discussion of the book Narrativas da Revolucion – Nós (Ievguêni Zamiátin – 2017); in May, with the work A Vida Invisível by Eurídice Gusmão (Martha Batalha – 2016); and in June the book White Nights (Fiódor Dostoiévski, 2005).
Buying the book at the UFRN Cultural Cooperative, participants of the Book Banquet receive a 15% discount.
