The Department of Anthropology at UFRN, with the support of the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (CCHLA), opened the website Povos Indígenas do RN, which was developed with the aim of monitoring indigenous communities and villages in Rio Grande do Norte, disclosing to the public aspects related to history and demography, including the socio-political context of regional indigenous communities.
The portal was the result of the articulation and effort of undergraduate students (Social Sciences, Pedagogy, History, Public Policy Management, Computer Engineering, Sciences and Technology, Social Communication/Audiovisual and Mechatronic Engineering and Psychology) of the discipline “Anthropology and the Study of Ethnic-Racial Relations” taught by José Glebson Vieira in the 2018.2 semester, as well as the postgraduate course in Social Anthropology at UFRN, through the participation of teachers and students.
The website also has the “Covid-19 – Indigenous Peoples of RN” platform, developed with the aim of monitoring the evolution of the new coronavirus within native communities, made possible thanks to the joint effort of researchers from the Department of Anthropology at UFRN and the state's indigenous leaders, gathering epidemiological data on the pandemic from the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of RN (APIRN).
APIRN has systematically monitored the health situation in indigenous villages and communities throughout RN, whether through monitoring and recording epidemiological data, or through the development of health prevention and control actions. The platform also intends to disseminate materials that facilitate the fight against the pandemic, as well as campaigns and initiatives that aim to minimize the effects of the pandemic on indigenous peoples, notably with regard to food security, which is being strongly affected by social isolation actions.
