“Women in Science” project trains students in Python programming for geographic applications

At the end of May, on the 29th and 30th, the Department of Geography (DGE) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) carried out the extension action “Women in Science: Introduction to Python and its Applications in Geography”. The main objective of the course was to present the programming language and explore its use in situations related to geographic knowledge. Check out some of the photos from the event.
Under the coordination of professors Jane Barbosa, Juliana Farias and Sara Medeiros, the action included the participation of 10 women and 6 men from various courses, including Geography, Architecture and Urbanism, Mechatronic Engineering, Postgraduate Program and Research in Geography (PPGe) and Postgraduate Program in Urban and Regional Studies (PPEUR).
The course was taught by Computer Engineering student Mariana Azevedo, who guided participants in their first steps in Python programming and taught how to apply this knowledge in geographic contexts. The extension action received praise from participants, who recognized the importance of acquiring skills in computational languages, given the growing production of data and its possibilities of use in the Human Sciences.
The project coordination thanks the professors from the Department of Computing and Automation (DCA/UFRN), Ivanovitch da Silva and Ignacio Sánchez, for the support provided to carry out the action.
