Article discusses domestic work in Brazil

The professor at the Department of Social Sciences, Anna Bárbara Talone, recently had her article “Frontiers in paid work at home: analytical and identity dilemmas”, published in the Journal Cadernos de Pesquisa da Fundação Carlos Chagas. The work was carried out in partnership with Nadya Araujo Guimarães (USP/Cebrap) and Luana Simões Pinheiro (IPEA/MDS) and can be seen through the link.
The article is part of a broader research agenda on domestic and care work that has been mobilizing the three authors for some time, whether in joint or separate reflections. Proposing to investigate domestic and care services, to this end, it uses a variety of methods, including bibliographic review, use of secondary data from IBGE and case studies.
Methodologically, the article is structured around three main axes: literature legacies, discussing how, since the late 1970s, a robust academic production on paid domestic work in Brazil has been consolidated; a Measurement of domestic and care work; intermediation and occupational boundaries based on case studies carried out in three Brazilian cities: Rio de Janeiro–RJ, São Paulo–SP and Natal–RN.
According to Professor Ana, the article analyzes paid work carried out in households, focusing on domestic and care services and their various configurations in Brazil. The objective is to highlight the analytical challenges faced by those who seek to understand these services in a context in which they, at times, are confused and, on other occasions, present clear distinctions. “We argue that, to understand these fields, it is essential to mobilize a plurality of interpretative tools and diversify empirical approach strategies”.
