PPGEL offers a subject for the next semester entitled: “Argumentation in the light of rationality and emotion”

The postgraduate program in Language Studies at the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts at UFRN will offer the subject (Topics of the Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics line) entitled: “Argumentation in the light of rationality and emotion” for the Levito 2016.2 period, which will be taught by prof. Giovanni Damele and the professor. Maria das Graças Soares Rodrigues.
The subject's syllabus provides for the study of argumentative strategies, the rhetorical function and modalities of rationality. Study of emotional speech.
The intended objectives are:

Identify the nature and function of strategic argumentation, using the example of legal rhetoric;
Characterize the modes of “internal” and “external justification” of legal argumentation;
Understand legal rhetoric as a particular case of practical argumentation;
Recognize the specificities of judicial debate and forensic rhetoric;
Identify the modalities of strategic rationality of the subjects that are part of the judicial debate;
Characterize emotion as an argument;
Identify linguistic marks of emotion as an argument.

The contents that will be covered are: legal rhetoric, rationality and strategies and emotion as an argumentative target.
The teaching method reflects the nature of the studies in attendance, we seek to use a non-directive methodology, encouraging and valuing, through debate, active participation in each session. We seek to encourage students' critical participation in the analysis of the discourse that motivates Justice decisions. Theoretical component 60%; practical component 40%.
The evaluation processes will be:

Preparation, presentation and discussion in class of a theoretical/practical research project on one or several themes and problems raised throughout the course;
Production and discussion of the final work.

Time: 2pm to 5pm
Location: Auditorium D
Students must attend Prof. Alain Rabatel, on September 19/16, entitled “Les stratégies émotives d’un repentir public offensif”.
Location: Auditorium D, from 2pm to 5pm
This conference will integrate content and workload of the II part of the course.
