Documentary about the impacts of fattening in Ponta Negra premieres at UFRN

The transformations caused by the fattening work at Praia de Ponta Negra, in Natal, are the subject of the documentary Maré Cheia: entre lace, nets and resistance, which will premiere on June 10th, at 9 am, in the auditorium of the Zila Mamede Central Library (BCZM), of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).

Announced in the week in which World Environment Day is celebrated, the documentary addresses the social, environmental and urban impacts resulting from recent interventions on the waterfront of the capital of Rio Grande do Norte. The production brings together reports from residents of Vila de Ponta Negra, researchers, representatives of public authorities and inspection bodies, giving visibility to the territory's traditional communities and the changes that have been altering ways of life historically linked to the beach, such as artisanal fishing and bobbin lace.

With an approach centered on listening, Maré Cheia follows different perspectives on the transformations of the waterfront and the conflicts that are still ongoing. Throughout the film, residents and experts discuss issues related to coastal dynamics, environmental changes and the effects of the work on the daily life of the community.

Among those interviewed are the lacemaker from Vila de Ponta Negra and pastoral master, Maria Helena; artisanal fisherman Núbia Peixoto; geologist Venerando Amaro; the public prosecutor Camões Boaventura; among other social actors linked to the topic.

More than presenting conclusions, the documentary proposes a reflection on the city, territory and environment based on the experiences of those who directly experience the changes on Natal's main urban beach.

The production is written by Tatiana Castro, Sandra Mara, Yann Henrique, Beatrice Ramos, Rierson Marcos and Gabriel Dias, members of the extension project “This city is mine: communication as a strategy for visibility and strengthening in the construction of sustainable territories”, developed by UFRN. The initiative seeks to strengthen dialogue between universities and society through public communication and the appreciation of traditional territories.

After the screening, a conversation will be held with guests, promoting debate and the exchange of perspectives on the topics covered in the documentary.
