The Colloquium “15 Years of the Arab Spring” proposes a critical assessment of the transformations that have occurred in the Middle East and North Africa since 2011. The event will bring together important Brazilian researchers (PUC-SP, UNIFESP, UFS, UFRN) on the topic of the Arab world. The event will be an opportune moment to discuss the legacies of the Arab revolts, their political, social and geopolitical impacts, as well as the processes of democratization, authoritarianism, conflicts and changes in international relations. The objective is to understand the current challenges and new dynamics that shape the region fifteen years later.
Thus, more than establishing a definitive balance, the meeting seeks to formulate new questions: what remained of the expectations of 2011? How were political regimes and societies in the region transformed? Why did certain revolutionary experiences give way to counter-revolutionary or authoritarian processes? And to what extent does the Arab Spring continue to influence the societies and geopolitics of the Middle East and North Africa fifteen years later?
The colloquium thus proposes to critically revisit the year 2011 based on the challenges of 2026, seeking to understand not only what happened with the Arab Spring, but also what its different legacies reveal about the present and future of the Middle East and North Africa.
