This year the Georisk Research Group, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), completes 15 years dedicated to research aimed at reducing disaster risks. “The group has reached a moment of maturity that allows for the expansion of opportunities and partnerships, which materialize in network projects, such as the Multirrisco Project, an interinstitutional partnership with the Federal University of ABC and the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters, and the Linc-Global Project, an effort by Ibero-Latin American countries”, says the Georisk coordinator, Lutiane Queiroz de Almeida.
Created in 2011 at UFRN, the collective of researchers has been working with a focus on producing disaster risk indicators, risk modeling and mapping, and education in disaster risk reduction. Such studies, linked to teaching, research and extension practices, collaborated to make Georisk a reference in the area, whether for scientists, technicians and managers, who work in partnership.
“At the local level, the opportunity to develop the Natal Municipal Risk Reduction Plan (PMRR-NATAL) brought a robust experience for the professional improvement of the group and the opportunity to consolidate the group as one of the main references for understanding the complexity of disaster risks on the scale of the municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte”, highlights Almeida.
The 7th Georsico Seminar is an event open to the public to celebrate this milestone and encourage dialogue around the topics researched by the group. The initiative takes place between the 17th and 21st of August, in the Auditorium of the UFRN Technology Center. The proposal is to share knowledge through round tables about the group's activities in the areas of research, teaching, communication and professional training with an emphasis on disaster risks. In addition to researchers linked to Georisk, experts from other institutions will be part of the program, such as professors Ana Luiza Coelho Netto (UFRJ) and Francisco de Assis Mendonça (UFPR). The activities end with the public defense of the thesis for a full professor of the Georisk coordinator.
The complete program will be published on the profile @georiscoufrn. The event is free and will provide certification to participants.
